Locum Tenens Nurse Practitioner - Urgent Care Needed in CA

Job Description

Our client in California is seeking an Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner for a 60-day assignment. This role involves managing acute and chronic respiratory conditions, performing focused assessments, ordering diagnostics, and providing patient education. The schedule follows standard clinic hours from 8:30 AM to 5 PM.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Evaluate and treat patients presenting with acute and chronic respiratory conditions.
• Manage conditions such as asthma, COPD, bronchitis, pneumonia, URI, influenza, COVID/viral illness, and persistent cough.
• Perform focused respiratory assessments and determine appropriate treatment plans.
• Order and interpret chest X-rays, labs, pulse oximetry, and other diagnostic testing.
• Prescribe medications, including inhalers, antibiotics, steroids, and nebulizer treatments when clinically appropriate.
• Identify patients requiring a higher level of care or ED transfer.
• Provide follow-up care and patient education for chronic respiratory disease.
• Participate in care coordination and referrals to outside specialists when needed.
• Support the clinic’s community health and culturally competent care initiatives within the Hoopa Valley population.

• Patient Cases Include:
• Asthma and COPD exacerbations.
• Bronchitis, pneumonia, URI, influenza and COVID/viral illness.
• Shortness of breath, wheezing, persistent cough and chest congestion.
• Sinusitis, pharyngitis and other upper respiratory infections.
• Nebulizer treatments and bronchodilator therapy.
• Pulse oximetry and respiratory assessments.
• Order and interpret chest X-rays and basic labs.
• Rapid testing for COVID, flu, RSV and strep, as available.
• Inhaler initiation, adjustment and patient education.
• Oxygen assessment and supplemental oxygen management.
• Smoking cessation counseling.
• Chronic asthma/COPD follow-up and medication management.
• Determine need for ED transfer or higher level of care for respiratory distress.
• Coordinate referrals for pulmonology, sleep studies or additional testing when indicated.
