Locum Tenens Physician Assistant - Urgent Care Needed in CA

Job Description

We are seeking an Urgent Care Physician Assistant for a 60-day assignment with our client in California. The schedule involves 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM shifts, focused on evaluating and treating patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions. Duties include managing illnesses such as asthma, COPD, and influenza, performing assessments, ordering diagnostics, and prescribing medications.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Evaluate and treat patients presenting with acute and chronic respiratory conditions
• Manage conditions such as asthma, COPD, bronchitis, pneumonia, URI, influenza, COVID/viral illness, and persistent cough
• Perform focused respiratory assessments and determine appropriate treatment plans
• Order and interpret chest X-rays, labs, pulse oximetry, and other diagnostic testing
• Prescribe medications, including inhalers, antibiotics, steroids, and nebulizer treatments when clinically appropriate
• Identify patients requiring a higher level of care or ED transfer
• Provide follow-up care and patient education for chronic respiratory disease
• Participate in care coordination and referrals to outside specialists when needed
• Support the client’s community health and culturally competent care initiatives

Additional Information

• EMR: Epic
• Cases include asthma and COPD exacerbations, bronchitis, pneumonia, URI, influenza, and COVID/viral illness
• Manage shortness of breath, wheezing, persistent cough, and chest congestion
• Administer nebulizer treatments and bronchodilator therapy
• Conduct pulse oximetry and respiratory assessments
• Order and interpret chest X-rays and basic labs
• Perform rapid testing for COVID, flu, RSV, and strep
• Initiate and adjust inhalers, providing patient education
• Assess oxygen needs and manage supplemental oxygen
• Provide smoking cessation counseling
• Handle chronic asthma/COPD follow-up and medication management
• Determine the need for ED transfer or higher level of care for respiratory distress
• Coordinate referrals for pulmonology, sleep studies, or additional testing
• Shift Hours: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
