Job Description

We are seeking a Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant for a 48-day assignment starting Apr 7, 2026, in VA. This role primarily involves managing post-operative cardiothoracic surgery patients, with some pre-operative duties and weekend coverage. Shifts are typically 7am-4pm, focusing on patient rounding, medication review, and minor procedures like chest tube and pacing wire removal under direct supervision.


Responsibilities and Duties

  • Work on the cardiothoracic surgery step-down unit.
  • Manage primarily post-operative patients, with occasional pre-operative patient management.
  • Provide weekend coverage for all non-ICU cardiothoracic surgery patients, supported by a second APP and Cardiothoracic Physicians.
  • Round on patients during weekends, reviewing medications, labs, imaging, and surgeon notes, and entering orders.
  • Document brief progress notes when a plan of care or medication adjustment is necessary.
  • Perform chest tube and pacing wire removal on weekends, initially under the direct supervision of an attending physician.
  • Avoid chest tube insertion.
