One of the greatest concerns that many of my providers have about traveling is how they will maintain their healthy lifestyle while on assignment. Whether your assignment is for one shift or several months, here are a couple of easy ways to make sure you stay healthy while on an assignment with Barton Associates.
1. Stay Active
Keeping up with your habit of regular exercise is crucial in maintaining your healthy and active lifestyle while on assignment. Many hotels have swimming pools and/or fitness centers. Some fitness centers are even open 24/7, which is great for you night owls and early birds!
Not a fan of the gym? If working out outdoors is more of your thing, utilizing apps like MapMyRun or asking the front desk for running trail suggestions can be quite helpful too! If you are nervous about the area in which you are staying, I suggest that you do some research prior to traveling. Look online to see what hotels are in safe areas of town, or are located by popular running trails, to make sure that you can stick to your outdoor runs while on the road.
2. Watch What You Eat
Just because you are traveling does not mean that you have to give up your healthy diet! If you prefer to cook your own healthy meals, or even have diet restrictions, request that you are booked at an extended-stay hotel that is equipped with a full kitchen. Popular extended-stay hotels include Residence Inn and Towneplace Suites (Marriott), Homewood Suites (Hilton), Staybridge Suites (IHG) and Hyatt House (Hyatt). The travel services department will do our best to meet your request, depending on what is available and where you are working.
It is still possible to eat healthy if you prefer to dine out after a long shift or if an extended-stay hotel is unavailable where you are working. Many restaurants now offer healthier options on their menus, some of which even include the nutritional facts or Weight Watchers points right on the menu. Another great resource is Yelp.com, where you can not only search based on healthy food options, but read reviews by other users in the area.
3. Get Some Rest
Sleep is key to staying healthy! If you are traveling by plane, request a window seat so that you can nod-off without bothering your neighbors. This can help to alleviate the effects of jet lag, especially if you are traveling cross-country. Although the free movies can be tempting, try your best to avoid them and get some shut eye. You will not regret this once you land and arrive at your assignment.
Getting a good night’s rest is important while on assignment, too. Continuing your regular sleep routine will help you to maintain your healthy and active lifestyle while on assignment. Without adequate rest, you will be less motivated to make time to fit in your regular workout and diet.
