After Thanksgiving meals have been devoured (and sometimes second or third Thanksgiving meals), you can find many enthusiastic deal chasers waiting in lines at stores across the nation in preparation for Black Friday. The same can be said the following Cyber Monday, when shoppers can find deals at online stores to help stuff stockings and check names off of their holiday shopping lists. With such a focus on finding the perfect gift or getting the newest gadget, we often lose sight of the true importance of the holiday season; the spirit of giving. In 2011, Henry Timms, deputy executive director of the Jewish community center 92 nd Street Y, and Kathy Clavin, CEO of the United Nations Foundation, recognized this void, and came up with the concept of Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday is a day where “charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.” The campaign is seen as a great way to engage a new base of supporters through social media efforts. Organizations from around the world are now participating in Giving Tuesday in over 40 countries, and online donations have exponentially increased over the course of the campaign. Barton Associates was proud to show our support on Giving Tuesday of Franciscan Hospital for Children, one of the nation’s largest pediatric rehabilitation hospitals. Franciscan seeks to provide compassionate care and education to children with special health care needs, and to help them reach their full potential. This Giving Tuesday, Franciscan Hospital ran a #Frelfie14 campaign, where members of the community were encouraged to share a photo with a description of why they support Franciscan Hospital for Children. Patients, parents, hospital staff, and organizations all expressed their pride in the work that Franciscan does every day, providing care for the smallest members of our community. With over 50+ photos submitted and more than 70,000 impressions, Franciscan Hospital for Children raised over $800 to support their healthcare operations. Barton Associates plans to continue the spirit of Giving Tuesday, and is currently in the midst of collecting donations for Franciscan’s Toy Drive to make sure that these brave children have a very special holiday.
