Researchers and medical professionals agree that proper medication reconciliation is critical to patient wellness. Patients must stick to their medication regimens in order to prevent prior conditions from reoccurring and also to make sure they do not improperly mix new medications with prescriptions they already have.
MedCoach is a free smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices that helps patients maintain their medication programs. The app reminds patients when they need to take their meds and warns them of any dangerous combinations. “ GreatCall developed the MedCoach app because lack of adherence to medication programs causes big problems for people and creates huge incremental costs in the healthcare system,” says David Inns, CEO at GreatCall. “We believe that an inexpensive, easy-to-use app on a mobile device is more appropriate for today’s active population than reminder systems that are chained to the home or to a desktop computer.” Users enter their medication information into the application including the recommended dosage. From there the user can set up reminders as well as refill, pharmacy, and doctor information. After that, the user will get an alert whenever he or she needs to take a dose of the medication. For iPhone users, a small colored circle will appear next to the app containing a number, which indicates how many alerts the user has. The MedCoach application is great for setting reminders, but it does more. The application is connected to the First Databank national drug database which allows users to find out more information about their medications. “Our goal is to offer a tool that does more than just remind,” Inns says. “It is a place to look up and learn more about medications, to facilitate refills, to track adherence, and store important medical information.” The MedCoach application is very user-friendly. If at any time the user needs help, he or she only needs to shake the phone and a help bubble will appear. It’s a great feature, especially for older users who may not be as tech savvy. In addition, GreatCall has a staff of U.S. based customer service representatives on call 24 hours a day, which is another thing that our seniors appreciate. Check it out!
