This month, the men in your life may begin looking more distinguished. Don’t be afraid. It’s only Movember. Movember is the annual month-long charity event where male participants grow a moustache for the entire month of November. According to Movember.com, “Through the power of the moustache, awareness and funds are raised for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer initiatives.” Who started Movember?
Movember sprang from humble beginnings in 2003, when two friends from Melbourne, Australia convinced 30 friends to grow moustaches for the month. Encouraged by the attention they received, the following year they decided to put their popular facial hair towards a good cause. The 450 participants raised $43,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. Since then the event has gone international. Last year, more than 145,000 Americans participated, raising over $15 million for men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. Why a moustache? Let’s face it, if you saw a friend or colleague begin to grow a ‘stache, you are going to ask why. The moustache is a fun, comical conversation-starter that relieves the tension associated with discussing the heavy issue of men’s health. How can I get involved? Men can register at Movember.com to grow a moustache. They start November 1 clean-shaven and grow their moustache for the month, meanwhile encouraging friends, family and colleagues to donate to their efforts. Women can participate as well, except they don’t grow a moustache. They register, start a team, recruit the men in their lives to participate, donate, fundraise, and plan and participate in events. Happy Movember!
