You have just spent an enduring 16 or so years sitting in classrooms, jotting down notes, stressing over exams, and writing papers. However, college graduation serves as a sigh of relief for many as they look to the prospect of finally entering the workforce full-time. Some students graduate with a job lined up, others are still on the hunt, and many are pursuing further studies in graduate school. Regardless of your situation, here are some tips to fill your first few months after graduation with smart planning, personal and career growth, and most importantly, success.
- Don’t feel like you have to go down a specific path
Have you ever felt like you may have settled with the wrong major? Have you realized that your field of study doesn’t necessarily align with your interests, goals, and aspirations anymore? If this is the case, keep in mind that your future career path is not defined by your major. Someone with a degree in engineering could go on to teach high school math, a person with a degree in journalism could head into sales, and the list goes on and on. Don’t feel as though you have to settle into a career because it is common for others who majored in a similar subject. Your skills, character, values, and work ethic will speak volumes for you in the workforce, so focus on these attributes in order to find the path that is right for you.
- Don’t get discouraged if one of your friends experiences immense success right away
You are most likely going to graduate with someone who suddenly moves across the country to work a luxurious corporate job, making more in six months than you will in your first two years. While it’s okay to be a little jealous of them, do not let it discourage you from your career pursuits! You can create your own success, too, as long as you put your mind to the task and go into graduate school or your new position ready to work. Finding a company that encourages upwards growth and promotional opportunities from within is a great way to build your personal success over time.
- Don’t be afraid to take a risk
Landing your first career can be a daunting task, but you should approach this challenge head-on and expel the fear of failure. Do not hesitate to apply for a job that is outside of your field of study or a little unfamiliar to you. As the saying goes, “a comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.” Takes this to heart during your career pursuits– you can grow and develop as a person if you take a leap of faith and dive into an opportunity that has the potential to change your entire life.
